"don’t let the things you hold onto ever outnumber the things you let go.
don’t let the things you remember ever outnumber the things you live for.”

- josh ritter, “tokyo!”

“my heart is drumming in my chest so hard it aches, but it’s the good kind of ache, like the feeling you get on the first real day of autumn, when the air is crisp and the leaves are all flaring at the edges and the wind smells just vaguely of smoke - like the end and the beginning of something all at once.”

freelance whales’ new album diluvia, described by paste magazine as “an elegant swirl of tasteful progress,” is out this week. their first album really won me over a couple years ago. i don’t think i listened to anything else from december 2010 to june 2011. ish. and their sophomore creation is proving to be just as enchanting. give her a whirl.

last night, lost in translation was on tv. i’d not seen it in a couple years, but since it’s one of my all-time favorites – solidly in the top ten – i couldn’t resist watching it again. it’s not a laugh-out-loud kind of movie, but bill murray still makes me laugh out loud for a good chunk of the first hour with all his japanese-culture-shock struggles. then things get more serious, or “melancholy” as the film is often described, and we enjoy the growing chemistry between bill and scarlett, lost (in many senses of the word), isolated together, against a backdrop of the muted colors of bustling tokyo and a perfect soundtrack. they’re kindred spirits rather than lovers; the scene in bed where bill rests his hand on scarlett’s foot is actually much more meaningful and romantic than anything else they could have done. it’s just beautiful.

aaaaaand another song. and video. this isn’t officially becoming a music-only blog but it’s certainly leaning that way for the moment. i’d be surprised if this band didn’t rise to indie glory post-haste.
